Product details
| SHAOXING HENGHUI TEXTILE | ITEM NO. M1393 PURE RAMIE · 42S x 42S · 80 GSM · 145 CM |
Item M1393 is a pure ramie plain weave at 42s × 42s, finished at 80 GSM and 145 cm wide, in a sand-washed finish. It is the lightest cloth we hold in the ramie line, and the construction is unusual: 100% ramie spun that fine and finished with sand washing gives a cloth that reads closer to a washed silk in fall than to a linen, while keeping the dry, cool hand that only ramie has.
Where this weight sits. At 80 GSM this is the featherweight end of the range — the weight used where the cloth should disappear against the skin. It is the weight for summer dresses, short skirts, blouses, shirts and light overlays, and at 145 cm a full dress panel or blouse front can be cut in one piece. The honest trade-off is that a cloth this light is sheer enough to need a lining on most designs, and it will show every crease it takes.
At 42 × 42 the yarn is fine, and the cloth is fine and smooth rather than textured. Ramie fibre comes from China grass and runs 6 to 60 centimetres — longer than any other bast fibre, and in natural fibres only silk beats it. That length is why ramie is about seven to eight times stronger than cotton.
At 80 GSM and 145 cm this is the lightest cloth we hold in the ramie line. The 145 cm width takes a full dress panel, a blouse front or a shirt body in one piece, which removes a seam from the most visible place on the garment. The count matters here because a 42s yarn can be woven closely enough to give a smooth, fluid surface — the cloth falls closer to a washed silk than to a heavy linen, and it moves with the wearer instead of standing away from the body.
Raw ramie is stiff and prone to hard creases, which is why plain ramie has never been a summer shirting cloth. Sand washing changes that in three steps: the cloth is swollen with alkali so the fibre loosens, it is abraded with real sand to raise a fine surface nap, and then a softener is applied.
The gains are measurable: surface comfort improves by roughly 30%, moisture and air management by around 20%, crease resistance improves, first-wash shrinkage comes down, and the surface goes matte and soft instead of coarse and shiny.
The cost is equally real: the abrasion slightly reduces fibre strength and lowers abrasion resistance, so this is a summer dress and shirt cloth, not a workwear or upholstery cloth. One more point worth raising at sampling: fine counts need a longer, gentler sand cycle to reach the same nap, so judge the hand, not just the weight.
At 80 GSM this cloth is meant to be worn against the skin and to move with the body — summer dresses, short skirts, blouses, shirts and light overlays. Three limits worth designing around. First, at this weight the cloth is sheer enough that most designs need a lining or an underlayer, and it will show every crease it takes.
Second, ramie has low elasticity, so a crease sets sharply with defined edges rather than softening away, and ramie hardens when it is wet — the opposite of flax — so press from the reverse and do not expect the cloth to relax a crease the way linen does.
Third, ramie is stiff and slightly brittle: fold it repeatedly in the same place and the fibre can break. On the other side of the ledger, ramie is stronger when wet than dry and shrinks only 3 to 4%, so it survives summer wear and washing better than the weight would suggest.
The 1688 factory lists this construction for shirts, tops, slip dresses, dresses, casualwear and fashion. At 80 GSM the cloth is meant to be worn against the skin and to move with the body, which is why a dress made from it hangs close and takes the drape of the wearer rather than standing away.
This is the weight where a dress works. The ramie share gives the cloth its cool, dry hand and fluid fall, and the sand-washed surface keeps it matte and soft against the skin. At 145 cm a full panel can be cut in one piece, which removes a seam from the most visible place on the garment.
At 80 GSM the cloth has very little body, so it works as a shirt only if you plan for it: expect to wear it over something, or to line it, and expect it to move rather than hold a shape. What it does give you is the coolest possible cloth against the skin — ramie releases heat faster than cotton and dries faster than cotton.
The lightweight overlay is where an 80 GSM cloth is unbeatable: a wrap, a cover-up, a beach layer that packs down to nothing. At this weight it also works as a lining fabric for a more structured garment, which is an economical way to use the whole width.
A full color card is held for this construction — 47 shades across the naturals, the pastels, the brights and the deep tones. Every swatch shows the same fine 42 × 42 plain weave and the same matte sand-washed surface, so what you approve on the card is what arrives.
Ask for a washed sample rather than greige on this one. The sand-washed hand is the whole point of the construction, and greige tells you nothing about it. Two things to test on the sample: the hand — it should feel soft, matte and dry, not stiff or papery — and the drape, which should fall in a clean line from the moment you pick it up.
Custom yarn count, density, weight, width and dyeing are all available on this construction, and digital print development can be run from your own design files. At 42 × 42 the cloth is already at the fine end of what this fibre can hold cleanly, so if you need a heavier version of the same hand, ask for a coarser count rather than a heavier finish.
