A light crepe has to solve two problems at once: it has to look soft and textured rather than cheap, and it has to stay stable at a weight where handling is easy. Those two requirements decide how the yarn and the finishing route have to be set.

At 105 GSM this is a 100% polyester crepe built from high-twist filament. The twist is what creates the surface: the yarn shrinks unevenly after weaving and leaves a fine crinkle that scatters light, so the cloth reads as matte and soft rather than flat. Nothing is printed or embossed onto the face.

1. Why Two Light Crepes Behave Differently

At a light weight the fabric is judged almost entirely on touch and on how it moves, because both are visible in a garment the moment it is worn. Potential problems include:

• A surface flattened by over-finishing, which removes the crinkle entirely.
• A papery or stiff hand when the wash is not soft enough for the weight.
• Sheer or uneven opacity across a wide width, especially in the pale shades.
• Shade variation between batches in the light neutrals, which show it most.
• Shrinkage or distortion after the first wash when warp and weft shrink unevenly.

For garment manufacturers these problems affect more than appearance. They increase inspection requirements, complicate cutting and create additional production cost. This is why quality should be judged not only by the hand at sample stage, but also by whether the yarn and finishing routes were developed for a light crepe.

2. The Yarn Creates the Surface

Because the texture comes from the yarn rather than the weave, the construction is built around twist and shrinkage behaviour. Holding that consistent is what makes the surface even from edge to edge.

3. Dyeing: A Light Route Where Shade Control Matters Most

The cloth is all polyester, so color comes from a high-temperature disperse process. At this weight and in this shade range, precision matters more than speed, because pale and neutral tones show any unevenness immediately.

Why This Matters

In the pale and neutral shades that dominate this type of fabric, a shade difference of a few percent is visible across a wide panel, and a flattened surface shows as a dull, uniform patch. Both are defects the wearer notices, and both are far cheaper to prevent at the dyeing stage than to reject after cutting.

4. Finishing for Opacity and Flow

The character of this fabric is easily destroyed with heat, so the finishing route is deliberately restrained. The two targets are a matte surface and enough body to move as a garment.

Texture Preserved, Not Flattened. Calendering and high-temperature finishing are kept light so the crinkled face survives.

Opacity in the Light Shades. The finish is set so pale colors stay covered rather than becoming sheer across the width.

Stable Width and Even Shrinkage. Warp and weft shrink in balance so the finished size stays predictable when a buyer orders to pattern.

Color Fastness

Color fastness is an important consideration for a light fabric often washed at home. The actual grade should be confirmed through testing under the applicable standard and test conditions. Where supported by laboratory results, a grade of 4 or above can be specified in the product documentation.

For bulk orders, we recommend confirming the required color fastness, shade tolerance, shrinkage expectation and width tolerance before production. Lab dip approval is carried out before bulk production.

5. Why Fabric Quality Matters to Garment Manufacturers

Light crepes are often bought on the feel of a sample and on the size of the color range. But when the yarn and finishing routes are not controlled, the cost appears later in cutting and in wear. Potential consequences include:

• Occasion dresses returned because the surface flattens after washing.
• Shade variation across a delivery lot, obvious in a pale shade under retail lighting.
• Panels shrinking unevenly, so a dress no longer matches the intended shape.
• Cloth shifting at the cutting table, raising lay-up waste.
• Rejects at final inspection after a wear test.
