| SHAOXING HENGHUI TEXTILE | ITEM NO. M1395 PURE RAMIE · 100S x 100S · 60 GSM · 137 CM |
Item M1395 is a pure ramie plain weave at 100s × 100s, finished at 60 GSM and 137 cm wide. It is the lightest cloth in this ramie line and the construction is unusual enough to be worth explaining first: a hundred-count yarn means roughly 100 metres of single yarn spun from one gram of ramie fibre, so the thread is about half the diameter of a 60-count yarn and the cloth comes out with almost no slub — smooth, silky, and with the highest luster of any bast fibre.
Where this weight sits. At 60 GSM this is at the bottom of the range — a genuine featherweight. In practice it belongs in three places: sun shirts and cover-ups, layering pieces worn over something, and overshirts and light jackets where the point is air rather than warmth. The honest trade-off is that pale shades are semi-transparent on a cloth this light, so specify a lining, a double layer or a deeper color.
At 100 × 100 the yarn is about half the diameter of a 60-count yarn, because a hundred-count yarn means roughly 100 metres of single yarn per gram of ramie fibre. Ramie fibre itself runs 6 to 60 centimetres — longer than any other bast fibre, and in natural fibres only silk beats it.
Spun that fine the cloth comes out with almost no slub: the surface is smooth, the hand is silky, and it carries the highest luster of any bast fibre. Where ordinary ramie is crisp and slightly coarse against the skin, a 100-count ramie is what people mean when they say “ramie that feels like silk”. That is also why it commands a premium over a 42-count, and why a 60 GSM cloth made on it can be worn next to the skin without any prickling at all.
At 60 GSM this is at the bottom of the weight range — a genuine featherweight. In practice that puts it in three places: sun shirts and cover-ups, layering pieces worn over something, and overshirts and light jackets where the point is air rather than warmth. The 137 cm width takes a full blouse front or dress panel in one piece, which removes a seam from the most visible place on the garment.
Two honest consequences come with the weight, and both are worth saying at sampling. First, white and pale shades are semi-transparent — in strong light a pale color shows the shadow of the body underneath, so specify a lining, a double layer or a deeper shade if that matters. Second, at 60 GSM the cloth is almost weightless on the body, which is exactly the point in hot weather and the reason this weight is sold for summer rather than year-round.
The cloth itself is dimensionally stable: ramie is stronger when wet than dry — immersed in water its tensile strength rises about 47%, against cotton which loses roughly 20% — and it shrinks only 3 to 4% where cotton shrinks 5 to 8%.
The behaviour to plan around is handling, not strength.
Ramie has Ramie has low elasticity, so creases set sharply and stay; and ramie
hardens when it is wet, the opposite of flax, so press from the reverse. Because pure natural ramie does shrink slightly, pre-shrink before cutting — a hot wash and a low-temperature press. And because 60 GSM is genuinely thin, it wants a fine needle, a 90/11 with a slightly tighter stitch, so the cloth is not left with visible punch holes. Send us your target garment and we will send the right weight in the right width, with a washed and an unwashed pair so you can judge before you cut.
The 1688 factory lists this construction for shirts, tops, slip dresses, dresses, casualwear and fashion. At 60 GSM the cloth is meant to be worn against the skin and to move with the body, which is why a shirt made from it hangs close and takes the drape of the wearer rather than standing away.
This is what the weight is for. Ramie moves heat away from the skin faster than cotton and dries faster than cotton, so the same shirt that is comfortable at 32℃ is still wearable in direct afternoon sun. The 100-count yarn is what makes it bearable next to skin — no slub, no prickling, a smooth dry hand.
At 60 GSM the cloth carries no warmth of its own, so it belongs over something rather than instead of it — a layer over a tee, a blouse under a jacket. That is also where a sheer fabric is an advantage rather than a problem: a translucent overshirt over a solid layer reads as deliberate.
A 60 GSM dress is a lining-required garment in most cases, and the lining does most of the work on the body while the ramie does the work on the eye. What the cloth brings is movement and coolness: it hangs close, it lifts as you walk, and it never clings the way a heavier cloth does.
A full color card is held for this construction, running through the naturals, pastels, brights and deep tones on the same fine 100 × 100 plain weave. Every swatch shows the same smooth, almost slub-free surface, so what you approve on the card is what arrives — though note that on a cloth this light, pale shades read more translucent on the body than they do on the card.
Ask for a washed sample on this one, and check two things in daylight rather than under shop lighting. First the hand — it should feel smooth and dry against the skin, with no prickling, which is the whole point of a hundred-count ramie. Second the opacity: hold the swatch up to a window and check how much light comes through the pale shades, because that is the one property a card photograph cannot tell you.
Custom yarn count, density, weight, width and dyeing are available on this construction, and digital print development can be run from your own design files. One practical note for anyone moving up from a heavier ramie: at 100 counts the yarn is fine enough that a slightly higher density is worth asking for if the cloth needs more body than this weight gives.
