Pure Linen Fabric 145 GSM
135-138 CM
2008 LINEN
100% LINEN
Item M1730 is a 100% pure linen woven fabric — the 2008 linen construction, woven at 145 GSM and 135–138 cm wide. At this weight it sits in the middle of the linen range: heavier than the 60–100 GSM cloths used for sheers and summer shirting, lighter than the 200+ GSM linens used for upholstery and heavy tailoring. That middle is where most linen apparel actually lives, and it is why this construction is the workhorse of the range. There is no second fibre here to soften the flax — this is linen in its most direct form.
There is no second fibre here to soften the flax, which is both the point and the trade-off. What you get is the full natural character of linen in its most direct form: the dry cool hand, the natural lustre that dulls gracefully, and the irregular slub that makes every metre slightly different from the last. It is a fabric that asks the wearer to accept a little character in exchange for a great deal of performance.

Five properties decide how this cloth behaves in wear. Together they are the reason a pure linen is specified instead of a pure fibre or a cheaper look-alike.
Where this weight sits. In the middle of the range, and the middle is where most linen apparel actually lives. Heavier than the 60–100 GSM cloths used for sheers and summer shirting, lighter than the 200+ GSM linens used for upholstery and heavy tailoring. That makes it the natural choice for shirting that stands away from the body, dresses and skirts that hold a shape, unlined jackets — and the honest trade-off is that it creases more than anything else here, and it stiffens slightly before the first wash.
There is no second fibre here to soften the flax, which is both the point and the trade-off. What you get is the full natural character of linen in its most direct form: the dry cool hand, the natural lustre that dulls gracefully, and the irregular slub that makes every metre slightly different from the last.
A flax fibre is longer and finer than any other bast fibre, and its tenacity is roughly seven to eight times that of cotton while remaining low in extensibility. In practice that means a fabric that resists abrasion and tearing, yet is about 20% lighter than an equivalent volume of cotton — strength without weight.
After degumming the fibre is white with a silk-like sheen, and it transports heat quickly, giving the cloth its characteristic cool feel. The hand is dry rather than slick, and the surface keeps a soft natural lustre that dulls gracefully rather than going flat. The fine irregular slub typical of linen is part of the fabric, not a fault, and gives each piece its own character.
Linen contains trace elements including tannin, pyrimidine and purine, which suppress common bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. Laboratory testing shows the antibacterial effect retains more than 98% of its effectiveness even after 50 wash cycles. The fibre is also naturally resistant to mildew and insect attack, so the cloth stays fresh between wears without any chemical treatment.
One property is worth stating plainly, because it is the reason linen is specified by people who want the fabric rather than by people who want a low-maintenance cloth. Linen has low extensibility and low elastic recovery: it creases, and it stays creased until the garment is worn or pressed again. That is the same behaviour as cotton, taken to a more visible degree, and it is why a linen shirt looks relaxed rather than pressed.
At 145 GSM and 120 to 190 GSM this is In the middle of the range, and the middle is where most linen apparel actually lives. Heavier than the 60–100 GSM cloths used for sheers and summer shirting, lighter than the 200+ GSM linens used for upholstery and heavy tailoring.. It crosses from shirting into light tailoring, and it is worth being clear about which end of the range a buyer is buying.
At 145 GSM this has real substance for a shirt, and it is the weight at which linen starts to behave like a shirt fabric rather than a voile. The dry hand and the natural lustre give it a dressed-up quality that a plain cotton shirting does not have, while the mid weight means it stands away from the body instead of clinging.
This is where the mid weight earns its keep. A 145 GSM linen has enough body to hold a full skirt, a slip dress or an unlined jacket in shape, while remaining light enough for summer. The 135–138 cm width gives efficient marker making for long panels, and the natural slub means a plain color still reads as a woven cloth rather than a flat surface.
For a trouser, a shirt-dress or a light jacket, this weight has the structure to hold a line without the stiffness of a heavy linen. It is the version of linen that works for a brand building a summer collection with more than one garment type in it.
